How AI Is Changing Dentistry—Without Changing Our Responsibility to Patients

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how dental professionals work. From improving administrative efficiency to helping teams organize information, develop educational materials, and streamline everyday tasks, AI has tremendous potential in the dental office.

But with that opportunity comes an important responsibility: Technology should make us more efficient without compromising patient privacy, professional judgment, or the standard of care.

At iSmile Orthodontics in San Ramon, Dr. Ron Hassanzadeh believes dental professionals should understand both sides of AI—how to use it intelligently and where appropriate boundaries need to remain.

Teaching Dental Teams to Use AI Responsibly

The program, “Smart Dental Teams: More AI, Less Liability,” is designed to help dentists and their teams understand how AI can improve productivity while keeping patient privacy and professional responsibilities at the forefront.

The goal is not to replace people with technology. It is to help great dental teams use technology to become even better.

Where Can AI Help a Dental Practice?

When used appropriately, AI can assist dental teams with many non-clinical and administrative tasks. It can help organize ideas, create patient education materials, improve internal workflows, summarize non-sensitive information, develop training resources, and reduce time spent on repetitive administrative work.

That means dental professionals can potentially spend less time on routine tasks and more time focused on what matters most: their patients.

However, convenience should never override good judgment.

Patient Privacy Still Comes First

Dental offices routinely handle sensitive patient information. The introduction of AI does not eliminate the privacy and security obligations that already exist.

Before placing patient information into an AI system, dental professionals need to understand what information is being shared, where it may go, how the technology handles that information, and whether its use is appropriate under applicable privacy and security requirements.

A powerful AI tool is not automatically an appropriate place for protected patient information.

This is one of the most important lessons for dental teams adopting AI: use the technology intelligently, but never casually.

AI Should Support—Not Replace—Professional Judgment

AI can generate an answer in seconds. That does not mean the answer is correct.

Dentists, orthodontists, and other healthcare professionals remain responsible for reviewing information and applying their own education, experience, and clinical judgment.

At iSmile Orthodontics, we see AI as a tool that can support professionals—not a substitute for the doctor-patient relationship.

The same philosophy applies to orthodontic care. Technology continues to improve how we diagnose, design, communicate, and deliver treatment, but technology is most valuable when it is guided by an experienced clinician.

Leadership Through Education

As an orthodontist serving San Ramon and the greater Tri-Valley, Dr. Ron believes being part of the dental community means more than treating patients. It also means collaborating with general dentists and specialists, sharing knowledge, and helping dental teams adapt responsibly as our profession evolves.

By educating fellow dental professionals about artificial intelligence, productivity, patient privacy, and responsible implementation, Dr. Ron and iSmile Orthodontics are helping local dental teams prepare for a future in which technology will play an increasingly important role.

The future of dentistry is not AI replacing dental professionals. It is dental professionals learning how to use AI responsibly to provide an even better patient experience.
