If you have started Invisalign® treatment, you may notice that your aligners can become slightly yellow, cloudy, or less fresh over time. This is common, especially when aligners are worn all day and night.
The good news is that cleaning Invisalign aligners can be simple.
Why Invisalign® Aligners Need Daily Cleaning
Invisalign® aligners are worn for about 22 hours per day, which means they are exposed to saliva, plaque, food residue, and bacteria throughout the day.
Even though you change aligners every one to two weeks, bacteria can still build up day after day. Daily cleaning helps keep your aligners clear, fresh, and more hygienic.
The Simple Cleaning Method
One of the easiest ways to clean your Invisalign aligners is by using an ultrasonic cleaner. These machines are commonly available online and typically range from about $30 to $100.
At nighttime, while you are brushing and flossing your teeth, place your aligners in the ultrasonic machine with warm water for about five minutes.
That is usually all you need.
Do You Need Cleaning Crystals?
You can use Invisalign cleaning crystals or other aligner-safe cleaning products if you prefer, but they are not always necessary for everyday cleaning.
For many patients, an ultrasonic cleaner with warm water is a simple and effective routine.
Cleaning Invisalign® Aligners: What to Avoid
Avoid using harsh or inappropriate cleaning products on your aligners, including:
- Listerine or mouthwash
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Household soaps
- Harsh chemicals
- Very hot water
These products may discolor, damage, or distort the aligners.
Keep Your Teeth Clean, Too
Cleaning your aligners is only half the process. Make sure you are also brushing and flossing your teeth before putting your aligners back in, especially after meals.
Putting clean aligners over dirty teeth can trap plaque, food, and bacteria against your teeth.
The Bottom Line
To keep your Invisalign aligners clean, fresh, and clear, use a simple daily routine: Brush and floss at night, place your aligners in an ultrasonic cleaner with warm water for about five minutes, and avoid harsh products that may damage the plastic.
This simple habit can help your Invisalign treatment feel cleaner and more comfortable.
