Why Are There Gaps in My Teeth During Braces Treatment?

By Dr. Ron Mehran Hassanzadeh, Board Certified Orthodontist

Have you noticed a new gap developing between your teeth while wearing braces? If so, you’re not alone.

One of the most common questions we hear at iSmile Orthodontics is: “Dr. Ron, why are there gaps in my teeth while I’m getting braces?”

The good news is that, in many cases, this is a completely normal part of orthodontic treatment.

Why Do Gaps Appear During Braces Treatment?

As braces begin moving your teeth into healthier positions, both the crowns (the visible part of the tooth) and the roots are being repositioned. During this process, temporary spaces can develop as neighboring teeth shift and align.

Orthodontic treatment is typically completed in phases. Early in treatment, our primary goal is often to straighten and level the teeth. Once the teeth are aligned properly, we can focus on fine-tuning your bite and closing any remaining spaces.

Are Gaps Normal With Invisalign®, Too?

Yes. Patients undergoing Invisalign treatment may also notice temporary gaps during treatment.

The difference is that with Invisalign®, teeth movement is digitally planned in advance. Many spaces are intentionally created and closed throughout the treatment process, as part of the clear aligner sequence.

Whether you have braces or Invisalign, temporary spacing is often a sign that your teeth are moving according to plan.

When Should I Be Concerned?

While gaps in the smile during orthodontic treatment are usually nothing to worry about, it’s always a good idea to let your orthodontist know if you notice:

  • A sudden or unusually large space.
  • A broken bracket or wire.
  • Significant discomfort or pain.
  • A change that seems unexpected.

At iSmile Orthodontics, we carefully monitor your progress at every appointment to ensure treatment stays on track.

Trust the Process

Orthodontic treatment can sometimes feel like taking two steps forward and one step back. Teeth may look different throughout the journey before achieving the final result.

Temporary spaces are often just that—temporary.

If you have questions about your braces or Invisalign® treatment, our team is always happy to help.
